Joshua Burnett leads Virescit Tactical Systems with over 19 years of experience in the military and Federal contracting arena. As the Co-Founder and CTO, he is directly responsible for overseeing not only the daily and long term mission and focus of the company, but also in leading the efforts behind the company’s work to improve strategic and tactical communications support and the cybersecurity infrastructure to the warfighters of America’s military and Federal agencies. He has continuously supported dynamic environments including three Secretaries of Defense, the United States Department of Defense, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the US Air Force and US Army, Federal agencies and militaries of foreign countries across Europe and North America, and various Federal level agencies of the United States.

Prior to founding Virescit Tactical Systems and after being medically retired from the US Army in 2014, Burnett served as a Senior Consultant and Subject Matter Expert in Network Security and Information Assurance through two consulting firms to the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Having worked across multiple large projects simultaneously, he was prepared to step away from consulting and founded his firm based on a single principle: “dedication to the advancement of defense communications technologies in order to save future lives on the battlefield and ensure the safety and security of the information of the United States and its citizens.”

His areas of expertise are based in the Cybersecurity arena. He specializes in Information Assurance, including the NIST Risk Management and Cybersecurity Frameworks; Network Security Engineering and Wireless Systems; System Integration and lifecycle management of systems and system of systems architectures; and training and curriculum development. Virescit Tactical Systems currently advises multiple defense and intelligence clients in their development of technologies to support the warfighter, cybersecurity policy development to the Corporate and Federal agency operations across multiple industries and one of the largest Cybersecurity training providers in the Washington DC metro area. Through all support, Josh and VTS have specialized in the execution of NIST Cybersecurity and Risk Management Frameworks (CSF and RMF respectively).

Joshua has been a voting member and advisor on the National Small Business Association’s Leadership Council and Cybersecurity and Technology Panel. He is a member of the AFCEA – Mobility and Cybersecurity working groups, an active Alumni and Peer Facilitated Support Group Leader with the Wounded Warrior Project. Additionally, he serves as a board advisor member to the Intel/McAfee Security Product Advisory Council and on the COMCAST Small Business Advisory Board. Lastly, he continues to contribute to industry feedback and direct engagement with NIST’s cybersecurity policy team in support of the generation of critical Federal cybersecurity policy and guidance across the SP 800 series.

In addition to world class, advanced leadership training and studies through the United States Army and Air Force, Mr. Burnett has received secondary education from the Community College of the Air Force, National American University, University of Maryland, the College of Southern Maryland, Harvard University and the US Army Cybersecurity Centers of Excellence.
